"Hey, hey, Sakura," Naruto said, turning into her arms. He nuzzled her shoulder, inhaled the scent of antiseptic and faint sweat, tiniest traces of old wood and fresh flowers.
"Hm?" she asked, voice that of the half-asleep, and threaded her fingers through his hair.
"Do you ever wonder if . . ." Naruto couldn't figure out how to put it, how to organize his question into the delicate phrases necessary. He lapsed into silence and shivered into her hands as she stroked his neck, his back, pulled his head gently into the shelter of her chest and arms.
"Why wonder?" she asked, and he closed his eyes.
His dreams were, as always, bitter but sweet, stolen dark chocolate melting on his tongue.
